Looks like it’s my turn to contribute here. My local retailer just got the 2012 version of Goose Island’s Juliet in stock so I had to get a bottle. This is the first time I’ve ever even seen this beer and since it’s American Craft Beer Week, I might as well drink it and write about it. Juliet is one of the “ladies” Goose Island produces in their line of Belgian-inspired ales, along with Sophie, Matilda, Madame Rose and Lolita. What is Juliet? I’ll let the brewery describe it:

Fermented with wild yeasts and aged in cabernet barrels with blackberries, Juliet is a tart, fruity, complex ale. Notes of wood, tannin, dark fruit and spice make Juliet an ideal beer to suggest to Pinot Noir enthusiasts and beer drinkers who are fond of Belgian sour ales.

Oh, yeah. That’s sounds like like a wheelhouse beer. As much I love hops, sours are my new thing. So let’s dig in.

Poured into my official BrewManiacs tulip (thanks again, Storminspank!), it pour a nice rust color with almost no head. Sours generally have pretty low carbonation so that’s not a surprise. I could smell the tartness as I poured it. Yeah. That’s the stuff. Come to daddy. Sticking my nose in the glass only affirms I’m going to like this beer. I get that funky tart smell you expect from beers fermented with wild yeast. So far no wood or blackberries though.

Taste is exactly what you’d expect from the aroma. At first you’re hit with the astringency and tartness. But, on the back end it gets smoothed out a bit by the wood and finishes with a really nice balance. But that tartness is still there. And that’s the way I like it.

As it warms up, the funk comes out a little more. But, again, the tartness is the star. It takes center stage and really doesn’t relinquish it. There’s no hint of alcohol on the tongue. Goose Island claims there’s some rye in the mash bill but I really don’t get any of that. The blackberries aren’t real prominent either (as opposed to the raspberries in Lolita). I suspect they’re there more for fermentable sugars than anything else.

Hello, friends. It’s been a shameful amount of time since my last post here. ACBW is a perfect time to rectify that, so let’s get right to it.

One of the last times we traveled north to Wisconsin, we finally took the time to stop in New Glarus on our way to Madison to tour the New Glarus Brewing facility. My wife had been there before they had the newer part of the brewery open, and I had never been. Long a fan of a lot of their brews, we decided to check it out. As Spank has written about here, New Glarus has really branched out over the past few years and produced some fantastic specialty beers. I am a fan of this company, and the beer I’m reviewing here is no exception.

A beautiful night for a beautiful beer

The bottle is a very nice stenciled description. While New Glarus doesn’t distribute any of their beers outside Wisconsin, this one is even harder to find, as they only sell it at their beer store located at the brewery.

From the bottle:

Bold floral bouquet sweeps forward, encouraged by the Maris Otter Malt. Ale and Brettanomyces promote complex Brett characters. Dry finish. Alive and still fermenting, this bottle will continue to build carbonation. Pour with care. Brewed 3-23-09. Bottled 6-18-09.

This beer pours a beautiful golden, almost copper color. A very nice head which was retained through drinking. Plenty of carbonation, and some really nice lacing. The description on the label mentions the floral bouquet, and that’s an understatement. A really great aroma stays with you the whole time you’re drinking this beer.

As for flavor, this is a very fruity, flavorful brew. At 7%, it’s deceptively smooth as well. This was a great refreshing drink on my deck on a beautiful evening. The IBU’s were originally 35, and they have mellowed out quite a bit. A small bit of sour gets you right in the back of your throat, but it is not a dominant characteristic of this beer.

I recommend trying a bottle if you’re near New Glarus (which really isn’t far out of the way when heading to Madison from the south). To continue with Flenker’s theme, and MetsFanVI’s suggestion, I thought this would be appropriate since New Glarus only brewed this ale once.

I was really planning on having this post done, oh, 3 or 4 hours ago, but, well, shit happened. Not really shit. I went out for an ACBW event, ran into friends, got some sushi, drank some beers, I think there was a shot of rum in there somewhere (surprisingly smooth, too. Disconcerting, because usually I hate the stuff), and now, a final beer for the night. Not a bad start to a week celebrating craft beers in America. I honestly can’t remember the last non-craft beer I had. Wait. . . it might have been a couple weeks ago, at a bar, when I had to chug a pint of PBR to prove a point. I won the contest, the point was made.

Craft beer is more than a novel thing to drink at the bars, and it’s more than the hunt for a rare bottle, or visiting breweries, or going to beer fests. Currently, I work at the 10th-largest craft brewery in the country, write a blog for another award-winning brewery and two fantastic beer bars here in KC, and have this here blog with some great friends. So, I’m a little involved in the community. It’s kind of great, I won’t lie. I’ve met some amazing people, from my fellow BrewManiacs, to brewers across the country, and the bartenders, liquor store owners, and enthusiasts in between. This week is a celebration of all of those aspects, so let’s drink some beers.

Tonight, I’m sticking close to home. I thought about opening some crazy beer, but A) I didn’t have the foresight to put anything in the fridge, and B) any of the “bigger” beers I have, I want to share. It seems that some people have real jobs, and can’t stay up drinking a 15% beer on a Monday night. So, I figured what better way to bring in the American Craft Beer Week and celebrate local beers than to talk about a few beers brewed less than 10 minutes from where I’m sitting right now?

So, so pretty

First up are a couple of brews from McCoy’s Public House, the aforementioned award-winning brewery. It’s a great brewpub, located in the historic Westport neighborhood of Kansas City. And I can walk there. It’s amazing. Tonight, they had a couple of beers Randalled for ACBW. A farmhouse that went through fresh honeycomb and lavender, and their IPA, pushed through some hops. The lavender really came through on the farmhouse, balanced by a nice sweetness and a little added viscosity from the honeycomb. The consensus with some friends was that this is a beer they should have frequently. For having complex flavors, it was easy to drink, especially at 7%. Plus, it was really cool to see the actual honey and lavender in the Randall, sitting on top of the bar. The IPA’s Randall had a combination of hops, pretty much whatever they had on hand. Instead of being an “in-your-face” hop bomb, the hops were more understated, and added an earthy flavor, as opposed to a huge bitterness. Don’t get me wrong, there was some residual bitterness there, but not nearly what I expected. It was nice, almost leaning towards a tea-like flavor. I preferred the farmhouse, but was glad to try both. I think every craft beer bar worth a damn should look into getting a Randall, and start playing around and adding different fresh flavors to beers. It might seem like a gimmicky way to bring in customers at first, but hey, if it makes a good beer better, why not try it?

Now, for the beer I’m currently drinking. Boulevard’s Single-Wide IPA. Yes, I received this beer for free. Yes, I am probably biased. But I like this beer, very much. It may not be as big as some other American IPAs, but it’s no slouch. 57 IBUs, and 5.7% ABV. Easy-drinking. And, as an added bonus, they’ve recently switched to pry-off caps, so these bottles can now be reused by home brewers. This is very exciting.

Oh, hello. All of my helpers watch.

The beer pours a clear golden orange, with some head, and a little lacing. Nice floral aroma from the hops, but not a lot of sweetness. Really clean and smooth mouthfeel, with some bitterness that hits you right away. Floral, grassy, hoppy. YUM. There’s some maltiness lurking, but the hops take center stage. I really like the label art. Good label art can go a long way.

This is a good beer. It had been a while since having one, and I had kind of forgotten how much I liked it. A very good IPA, great for when you want some hops without destroying your mouth, and/or want to stay on the lower end of ABV. I’d put this up against nearly any other IPA. Go out and buy some and try it for yourself. Tell the clerk or bartender that I sent you. You’ll probably just get a funny look, but it’s worth a try.

I really had no choice in the song selection for this post. Drinking beers from close to home, on the 60th birthday of one of my idols. It has to be this

Click here to view the embedded video.

Happy American Craft Beer Week. Let’s all drink some beers and have a good time.

American Craft Beer Week is here! Hooray! Officially kicking off today, May 14, and running through May 20, ACBW was designated by the Brewers Association to celebrate the goodness that is craft beer in the US. Brewers and establishments all over the country are holding events to celebrate. Check out the list on the always-excellent CraftBeer.com.

But, more importantly, ACBW will be the proverbial fire under our butts here on BrewManiacs.com. We’ll actually be putting content out here! You can pick your jaw up off the floor. I know it’s been slow around here. But, hey, life gets in the way sometimes. We’ll have some reviews up this week for sure, and either a podcast or open beer thread this weekend. Stay tuned!

And, as always, your contributions is what makes this site so good. If you want to send in a review, mail it to brewmaniacs@gmail.com and we’ll post it up. Length doesn’t matter (heh) and pictures are always good. If you don’t want to do a review, just send in pictures of you drinking a craft beer.

But, most importantly, enjoy the week!

Well well well, hey guys. I reckon I should get back into posting blog updates, now that the BEERacketology freebies are over. Not a moment too soon, either. Next week, May 14-20, is American Craft Beer Week. A week I hold near and dear. Here’s a great little video about it, including a friend to Brew Maniacs, Julie Weeks from Boulevard.

Click here to view the embedded video.

You should check around your area, see what sort of events are happening at the cool beer bars and/or breweries. I can only speak to things happening around Kansas City, but if we’re any indication, it’s going to be a good week.

On Monday, Stone Brewing’s brewmaster, Mitch Steele, will be at Julian, doing an interactive dry hopping event at Julian. What does this mean? It means that the head brewer from one of the first breweries to bring “in-your-face” hops will be on hand, giving everyone a how-to on dry hopping beer. Mitch will be there with a bunch of Stone IPA and hops, and you’ll have the chance to make your own hop additions to the beer. If you’re there for the 4-course beer pairing dinner (the main course is a pork belly with Citra and Simcoe hop infused braising liquid), you’ll get a growler of your own personal dry hopped beer! WHOA!!! Or, if you’ve got plans that night, or can’t make it, Mitch will be at Martin City Brewing Company on Tuesday, with some 2012 Stone Russian Imperial Stout and Stone Smoked Porter with Vanilla Beans on tap. Pretty damn cool.

If that’s not your thing, then maybe the lures of Westport will do it. Beer Kitchen will have special 3-course meals every night of the week, to go along with events every night at McCoy’s & the Foundry. Tuesday night is the release of McCoy’s Maibock, where $8 will get a 22 oz glass full of beer. And you get to take the glass home. Neat!

I’m sure we’ll be doing more stuff around here, so check back for it. And if you know of any events, send them our way, and we’ll get them posted. Most importantly, get out and enjoy some craft beers. The more local, the better!!!

Now that BEERacketology is officially over, it’s time to dive back into the reviews here.

The Alchemist Heady Topper

ABV: 8.0
IBU: 120
Style: Double IPA (Imperial IPA by my judgement)
RateBeer: 100/100
BeerAdvocate: 100/93

Aaron (@ndsumiller) recently came into some Heady Topper from Vermont. It’s not easy to get. It’s akin to people who don’t live in Minnesota trying to get Surly. And Aaron was damn nice enough to give me one of those hard to get brews… for that I can’t thank him enough.

In the video, I mention that it’s right up there in regards to all the big dogs in the DIPA world. After some reflection, it’s certainly top five, probably top three, and goes head to head with Pliny.

Give it a watch:

Verdict:

As I mentioned in the video, please let us know if you would like to write a guest review on our site. You might have the worst palate in the world drinking some nasty beer – that’s fine. Everyone is different and everyone has their own opinions. Get in contact with us on Twitter (@brewmaniacs) or use the Contact Us on this site to get a hold of us. Or just hit any of the regular contributors up on Twitter (@rod_leviathan, @storminspank, @MetsFanVI, @marcmorehouse) and we’ll figure something out.

And don’t forget to vote for the winner of BEERacketology…

I’ll re-hash some information on these two breweries from recent BEERacketology rounds, as well, below…
Here’s info on the last round these two competed in.

#12 SEED – TOPPLING GOLIATH
BREWERY NAME: Toppling Goliath Brewing
LOCATION: Decorah, IA
FOUNDED IN: 2009

OVERVIEW: Clark Lewey is the owner with the vision (and, thankfully, fine credit to grease the wheels). Mike Saboe is the brewmaster. Together, it’s working. A 310-gallon vat went into production last summer. You’re seeing more and more of it in eastern Iowa, but be patient. Growth takes more money than time.
BEERS: Dorothy’s New World Lager, Tsunami Pale, Golden Nugget, Tsunami Dark and peusdoSue. Seasonals include Rover Truck, Winter Solstice, Murph’s Irish Red, Naughty 90, Rush Hollow Maple Ale, Millennium Falcon, Zeelander, Assassin and Kentucky Brunch. (Click here for more info.)
THE GOOD STUFF: Tap room is pure kick-ass. Distribution is growing. It’s all over eastern Iowa.
THE BAD STUFF: TG tried bottling. It didn’t go well. There was some leakage and overflow with the Assassin. But I’ll say this, I had it St. Pat’s weekend and it was monstrously good. I supposedly had a leaky bottle, but the beer had a head and everything. Bottling is the next step. Fans of TG will probably wondering when.

THE BEER

LAGERS/BOCKS: Dorothy’s New World Lager is a 3.76 on BA.com. It’s not my fave of theirs, but, in CR, if that’s all the TG they got, I’m drinking it. Grade: B-

PALE ALES/IPAs: pseudo Sue and Golden Nugget are the Batman and Robin of Iowa-made IPAs. So delish and, thankfully, so available in Cedar Rapids (thank you, Parlor City!). Zeelander is great (Nelson Sauvin hop from New Zeeland). The Hop Patrol series is kick ass. TG does the hop very well. Grade: A

STOUTS/PORTERS: I give super-high marks for The Assassin and Kentucky Brunch. I also love Norseman’s Wrath and Rover Truck. Go get these beers. You’ll believe. Grade: A

AMBERS/BROWN: Murph’s Irish Red is your St. Paddy’s beer for life. Or should be. I think that’s the only one, but check the website. Grade: B+

STRONG ALES: I think the Assassin and Kentucky Brunch fit here, as does the Naughty Temple, which I don’t know nearly as well. Grade: A

SPECIALS: Again, Assassin and Kentucky Brunch. One I’d throw in is the Millennium Falcon, a session IPA made from Millennium hop and Falconer’s Flight blend. I missed out on it, but MetsFanVI loved it. Grade: A

OVERALL: Distribution is growing, but you’re going to need to be patient. It’s really great stuff and I lament the Cedar Rapids place I work wasn’t a Decorah place. Overall: A-

VS

#2 SEED – SURLY

BREWERY NAME: Surly Brewing Co.
LOCATION: Brooklyn Center, MN
FOUNDED IN: 2006

OVERVIEW: Omar Ansari started this brewery in his parents’ abrasives building and tracked down Todd Haug (@surlybrewer) to help him brew bold beers.
BEERS: Furious IPA, Bender Brown Ale, Coffee Bender Brown Ale, Cynic Ale Saison, Abrasive Double Oat IPA, SurlyFest Rye Lager, Hell Helles Lager, Bitter Brewer, Darkness Russian Imperial Stout, Smoke Oak Aged Smoked Baltic Porter, Wet West Coast IPA
THE GOOD STUFF: Surly Gives a Damn. Tasting Room. Surly Nation. Surly changed the liquor laws in Minnesota, allowing Brew Pubs to exist in the state. Really freaking awesome beer. Beer in a 16 oz can is awesome, many bigger craft breweries are now moving to cans.
THE BAD STUFF: You can only buy their beer in state of Minnesota. Can one be too Surly?

THE BEER

LAGERS/BOCKS: Only seasonal, nothing in their regular lineup. Grade: N/A

PALE ALES/IPAs: CynicAle – a saison that I don’t seek out. Furious – 100 IBUs and around 6% ABV, it’s one of the best IPAs you’ll ever taste, huge grapefruit notes exude from this beer. Grade: A

STOUTS/PORTERS: A huge bummer they don’t have any in their regular lineup. Smoke and Darkness are seasonal only. Grade: N/A

AMBERS/BROWN: Bender – very smooth oatmeal brown. Coffee Bender – it’s Bender that has been cold-pressed with local coffee, very tasty. Grade: A

STRONG ALES: None in the regular lineup. Grade: N/A

SPECIALS: Abrasive Ale – massively hoppy and ridiculously delicious Double IPA. Wet – my personal favorite, so sticky, so grassy, it’s like eating hops with this fresh hop IPA, Surly went 100% Citra Hops this past year and the result was heaven in a can. Surly Darkness – I have to think they are ripping off Dark Lord with this beer, but I’m ok with it because it’s an amazing Russian Imperial Stout. Smoke – this is a smoked baltic porter, personally I think it’s too smokey. Surly One/Two/Three/Four/Five – their anniversary beer, this year it was a sour and it did not disappoint. Hell – a helles lager with a lot of German influence. Surly Fest – a non-Octoberfest Octoberfest beer. Bitter Brewer – meh. Many more specials that you can get at certain festivals, but they do not bottle them (i.e. – Damien, Moe’s Bender, etc…) Grade: A+

OVERALL: Surly really fails at reaching all ends of the beer spectrum and most of their beers don’t actually adhere to many of the categories. This is by design however and something Omar and Todd wanted to do. You won’t see many GABF medals for Surly, that’s because they don’t qualify for many due to their blending of styles. Distribution is a freaking NIGHTMARE, only accessible in Minnesota and even then it’s tough to know when and where you will find it… and that sucks. Their specials are some of the best around and their IPA is a much have. For such a young brewery, Surly has some great beers, though. Grade: A

Bells, Toppling Goliath, Russian River, and Surly made the Final Pour, it’s up to you to decide who makes it to the championship of BEERacketology.

Four breweries are left standing just <del>weeks</del> months after the start of our inaugural BEERacketology…thing… And here they are:

THE FAVORITE: #1 seed Bells Brewery out of The Krakken region.
THE UNDERDOG: #12 seed Toppling Goliath out of the DrunkHulk region.
THE WILDCARD: #2 seed Russian River out of the #Flenker2012 region.
THE DIAPER DANDY: #2 seed Surly Brewing out of the Quick and Dirty region.

Here’s how we will break down this round. We’ll take a beer from each brewery and give you our feedback on it, as well as other random shit thrown in. Voting ends late Wednesday night.

SEMI-FINAL #1: Bell’s (MetsFanVI) vs. Toppling Goliath (Morehouse)

Bell’s Expedition Stout

by MetsFanVI

We’re down to the the Final Four. To no one’s surprise, Bell’s emerged from the Krakken Region as the winner. It came in as the #1 seed and was never really tested, beating Tyrenan, Oskar Blues, Anchor and Firestone Walker in the first four rounds.

So now I have the challenge of writing about a brewery that everyone knows and loves. Rather than trying to go through all their beers, I thought I’d review a particular beer they make. Bell’s is known for their stouts. They make a bunch of different kinds, most of which are highly rated. Expedition Stout is Larry Bell’s take on the imperial stout style. From their web site, it’s described as:

One of the earliest examples of the Russian Imperial Stout in the United States, offers immensely complex flavors crafted specifically with vintage aging in mind, as its profile will continue to mature and develop over the years. A huge malt body is matched to a heady blend of chocolate, dark fruits, and other aromas. Intensely bitter in its early months, the flavors will slowly meld and grow in depth as the beer ages.

Vintage aging, huh? Lucky for you*, it just so happens I have a few bottles stashed away in the cellar. I bought these at a special Bell’s release at John’s Grocery the summer Iowa moved out of the dark ages and lifted the ABV limits on beer. One of the cool things about Bell’s is they used to put a date code on their bottles which you could enter on their web site to see when the beer was bottled. Now they put a straight date on their so you don’t even need to look ip. Either way, these bottles are code 9384. According to the Bell’s site, this batch was bottled on October 15, 2009. Whoa. I kind of forgot about this beer. Let’s see what 2.5 years of of cellaring does to it!

Expedition Stout is a 10.5% ABV beer. That’s pretty much in range for the style. One of the things I like about it is it doesn’t taste like a giant beer. There is a little heat there but just enough to keep you on your toes. I also like that it comes in a 12-oz bottle. I’m not a fan of bigger beers coming in bombers, although I know that seems to be the norm. A 12-oz bottle allows you to drink one and not be a wreck or try a couple of different beers in the same night. Bombers don’t lend themselves anything more than “one and done.”

Poured into my official Brew Maniacs tulip (thanks Spank!), the Expo gave a very thin 1/8″ head that hung around just long enough for a quick picture. The smell is very sweet, almost syrupy, which is pretty typical for the style. You need a ton of malt to get this kind of body into a beer. The initial taste tells me this beer is way too cold. I get a little sweetness up front which gives way to a nice smooth roasty taste. Either way, I need to let this sit out for a little to warm up and let some of the favors come out. I’ll be back in a bit…

Are you still here? Good. The Expo has warmed up a bit and, as I suspected, it’s really starting to show its soul. Unlike a lot of imperial stouts these days, Expo is not barrel aged nor does it have any “extras” like coffee added it to. It’s just malt, hops, yeast and water. But, that combination leads to some remarkable flavors. You get bitter coffee and chocolate. Even a little bit of black pepper, but not enough to be distracting. There’s also figs and raisens. The age has really mellowed this beer and taken some of the body out of it. There is almost no alcohol flavor present. It really doesn’t have any “legs” in the glass either.

In keeping with a theme, I drank it with some “vintage” Girl Scout cookies. I found a box of Shout-Outs in the back of the pantry that my wife guessed were from last year. Shout-Outs are a “Belgian-style caramelized cookie” and they paired with the beer very nicely. I would have liked to try some Girl Scout Lemonades with the Expo, though. I saw on some beer show’s chef pairing Expo with a lemon-based dessert. I thought that odd but all the tasters raved about it. Alas, apparently my wife doesn’t hoard Lemonades so Shout-Outs it was.

Overall, this is just a fantastic beer. Two and half years may put it past its prime. But, it certainly makes it a much more drinkable beer. It’s not as aggressive and attention-grabbing. It just seems to be missing that extra something something it has in its youth. Either way, I’d still put it up against any of the hard to find imperial stouts. Despite its ubiquity, this is a must-try beer. Beer Advocate readers give it a 93.** Rate Beer readers give it a 100 both for style and overall. So don’t take my word for it. Just go try this beer. But, I suspect if you’re reading this blog, you already have.

* Actually, it’s lucky for me as I get to drink it. You just get to read about it.

** Interestingly, though, the owners at BA only give it a 65. But that review is from 2003 and their big complaint was lack of carbonation. I’m not sure I’d knock 30 points off an imperial stout for low carbonation. But then I don’t have a beer review site. Oh, wait. Yes I do. The hell with them.

<><><><><><><><><<><><><> <><><><><><><><><<><><><> <><><><><><><><><<><><><>

Golden Nugget: Damn near my last beer on this earthly plane

By Morehouse

The yellow stuff, some of that is Golden Nugget. You'll be clawing to get it like zombies for brains in a few years. Instead of "braaaaaaiinsssss," you'll be zombie squawking "Nuuuuuuuuuuggggggettt"

The weather radar on my phone looked like an axe murder.

The red flowed over the orange and yellow with some genial splotches of green. OK, it looked like an axe murder of ET. Either way, it was not good. It was the storm system of the century of the day. It was bad in Oklahoma, it was bad in a place called Thurman, Iowa, yet another Iowa town I’m just hearing about for all the wrong (weather) reasons. And it started to swirl into bad in North Liberty.

It was a celebration of entrepreneurial-ship. We met up with good friends who happen to be sponsors for our podcast. We were the No. 10 podcast in the country last week, according to iTunes. In the age of gagging media, it’s something. My colleague and I love doing it, so we jumped at the chance to meet up with Brian and Dan, great guys who are damn funny.

I figured bad weather, so I drove the 2002 Highlander to the spring game, knowing we’d meet up at Red’s Alehouse in North Liberty. Dan drove a new car. He heard the word “hail” and sweat started to form on his upper lip.

Lightning burst. Serious and fierce lightning. The power flickered. The gentleman owner of Red’s popped into the back room. His voice was maybe on low-level alert, calmly giving everyone directions to the basement. Michael sat across the table. We know what’s in Red’s basement. It has one of the finest beer collections in our area. We were good with this and started checking to see how many brews our jackets might be able to mule out.

Then, it got serious. The bloody murder on my phone was digitizing on the big screen TV via a local station. The weather lady was sitting down, so how bad could it be? What’s that sound? The North Liberty tornado bell or horn or party favor belted out the warning. Lights flickered again.

Our waitress was undaunted. She made her round, ignoring the weather warning, and asked if we were good. No, we weren’t good. I was out of beer.

The lacing of my second Golden Nugget from Toppling Goliath held to the sides of my pint glass. The lights went out for a second, not a good sign. I am not an alarmist. I’ve been through tornados. Well, not actually in a tornado, but I’ve been around them a few times, once a few years ago here and way back in my early newspaper days in southern Minnesota.

Goddamnit, if I’m going to go out, I’m going to go out with Toppling Goliath and Golden Nugget. I totally ignored the waitress’s cleavage (hey, my life was flickering before my eyes at this point) and asked for a Golden Nugget.

I don’t know if the Toppling Goliath folks consider G Nugg their flagship, but it’s a strong statement.

Citrus, floral, just want you want out of an IPA. It’s a simply glorious rush of orange and lemon at first, with the lemon being a strong opening statement. The hop profile ranks up with all the IPAs that you know and love. Yes, I’m looking at you, Ruination, and you, HopSlam, and, YES, you, Dreadnaught. Yes, Dreadnaught, you!

It’s 6.8 percent. It’s also about as good as it gets for an introduction, at least for me, to golden nugget hops. Hop aroma launches out of the glass. Fruity with a bit of the bitter. Just a wonderful hoppy burst. Easy to drink. Blows a lot of the name IPAs out of the water. Right there with my faves (mentioned above).

My usual spot for G Nugg is Parlor City in Cedar Rapids. I’ve been meeting there with Sparky, the Brewmaniacs actual brewer, for the last few weeks. Here’s what got my attention: Last Thursday, we were there and Sparky had a G Nugg and then something else and for the next beer said, “I’m not making that mistake again, I’m going back to the Golden Nugget. I’m stuck on that beer.” This got my attention because Sparky is a curmudgeon’s curmudgeon. He thinks Ebenezer Scrooge was more than fair with his clerk mule Bob Cratchit.

And he loves G Nugg.

Back to Saturday night.

The rain replaced oxygen outside. I’m pretty sure goddamn frogs were falling out of the sky. The nice waitress — if tornado bells don’t make this woman flinch, we need to party — brought my Golden Nugget. The lights went out for just a second. The tornado horn/bell continued. Is there a more harrowing sound for midwesterners? Can nature conjure anything more insidious than a night tornado?

Michael was on the ropes. Soon, his wonderful wife, Jen, would pick him up. Smart move on so many levels. Brian was downing whiskey and laughing his ass off. Dan worried about his car. I tried to get Scott hooked on the G Nugg, but he’s not quite ready for the happiness. I’ll get him there.

The lighting snapped like a lockerroom towel on a bare ass. I stole a look up to the heavens.

This much, these few minutes with this wonderful, brilliant beer, you damn well better let me have this, no matter how much I’ll have to pay for it later.

Hey, we made it through another one. I’m going to consider Golden Nugget tornado repellent.

<><><><><><><><><<><><><> <><><><><><><><><<><><><> <><><><><><><><><<><><><>

VOTE FOR YOUR CHOICE TO MAKE THE CHAMPIONSHIP -

SEMI-FINAL #2: Russian River (Flenker) vs. Surly (storminspank)

The Sours, Oh the Sours!

By Flenker

Consecration – the act of dedication to the service & worship of a deity. Yes, it’s a tired cliche to use a definition, but that sounds about right for my feelings towards Russian River. The first beer of theirs that I had was Pliny the Elder. When I saw it, I freaked the hell out. I did the same when I found it on tap when I was in Denver. Not that I “worship” them, but I can say with confidence that they’re one of my top 5 breweries, if not #1. So, you might say I’m pleased to see them make it this far, and even more pleased to have an excuse to pop open a bottle I’ve had a little while and review it.

Hello beautiful.

Russian River’s Consecration is an ale aged in oak barrels with currants added. It says so right on the label. It also says it’s a sour ale, barrel aged 4 to 6 months, then lists all the good bugs that are in it – Brettanomyces, Saccharomyces, Pediococcus, and Lactobacillus. If just reading those names doesn’t get your mouth watering, then I don’t think you have any hope.

It pours a dark red, almost brown. Very small head to it, but it could have been the way I poured. Lots o’ little bubbles clinging to the side of the glass. The black currants are there in the nose, as is the sour. O the sour. There’s even some chocolate hanging out in the back. Hey chocolate! I hope you’re ready to party!

Initially, it’s light on the tongue, and then BOOM you’re soured. It’s a puckerer. Mouth waterer. I love it when that happens. Again, the black currants are there in the taste, and the chocolate comes out a little more. And all of the funkiness you’d expect from a beer aged in Cabernet Sauvignon barrels. A little bit of the oak is present, but it takes 2nd (or 3rd) stage to everything else. This isn’t the sourest beer I’ve had, but it’s up there on the list. I think it has more “funk” than straight-up “sour,” if you know what I mean. Horse blankety. Not one to slam, that’s for sure. It’s a sipper. I think as it warms, more of the funk comes out. The bottle mentions a tobacco taste, but I’m not getting it. Maybe at the far, far end, but it’s a stretch.

Russian River has a neat bottle log section on their site, much like Bell’s. My bottle is labeld as batch 004×4 – brewed March 25, 2009, and bottled February 5, 2010. I wish I had a few bottles from different runs to taste and compare. I love doing that stuff.

This beer. So good. And a good representation of the barrel aged beers Russian River makes. I’ve yet to try them all, so I can’t say it’s my favorite. Actually, I think I can definitively say it’s not my favorite, as I liked Sanctification more. Still, that’s like saying I like carnitas tacos more than I like adobada tacos. Either way, I win. This is a borderline A/A+ beer, world class all the way.
<><><><><><><><><<><><><> <><><><><><><><><<><><><> <><><><><><><><><<><><><>

Surly you can’t be serious. I am serious and don’t call me Surly

So my favorite Surly isn’t in season right now, that sucks. So I guess I’ll have to drink multiple Surly beers to make up for it. I didn’t feel like typing, so instead I made an elementary-school quality video of some Surly brews. Watch it if you want. I feature Abrasive Ale and Furious although after I finished the video I realized I didn’t talk a whole hell of a lot about the beers themselves. I rambled like a prepubescent teen (cracking voice and all).

For the record, here’s my complete review of Surly Wet (my favorite Surly beer) from last year:
SURLY WET IS SO GOOD IT MAKES WHITE T-SHIRTS BEG FOR IT

The long and short on Surly Brewing:

GOOD: Their beer, their sense of community/volunteering, their attitude
BAD: Their supply, their distribution, their attitude

<><><><><><><><><<><><><> <><><><><><><><><<><><><> <><><><><><><><><<><><><>
